Highlights:
Will we find out Alec's power? Question 3.
Will the same characters appear in later books? Question 4.
Do you feel empathy for Victoria? Question 12.
Why does Bella have such low self esteem? Question 14.
Stephenie Meyer: She wants to know if I wrote stories in my youth. I never really did much of that. I wrote a little kids' story once when working at a day care 'cause I had all my little three year olds and I put their names into the story, and I did write that one down for them. And there were a couple other times that I wrote , like, a page or two here of an idea, but never with the thought that I would ever finish anything. So, not really. My writing career really began when I started writing Twilight. OK, yes.
Question #2: Where is your next series going to be set?
Stephenie Meyer: Um, are you talking about Host?
Question #2: Yes.
Stephenie Meyer: All right, well, my next series, well right now it's a stand alone, but we'll see if I can stay away from it, leave it that way. It comes out in May, it's called The Host, it's set mostly in the southwest, a little bit, actually a little tiny bit in Chicago. *crowd screams* It starts out in Chicago, and then there's a little bit in San Diego, and then the rest of it for the most part is in the southwest. Yes.
Question #3: Will we ever know what Alec's power is?
Stephenie Meyer: OK, first, will you ever know what Alec's power is. Yes, you will. Some day, some day. OK. Yes.
Question #4: I know you said that book four would be the last book of Bella's story, are you going to continue with any of the other characters?
Stephenie Meyer: She wants to know if I'm going to continue with the other characters after Bella's story is told. I can't say for certain. I would like to. I do have a fairly intricate outline for book five. That's not including Midnight Sun, that will be the next one. It isn't told from Bella's point of view, but the characters that you know now will remain characters in the story, so like Alice and Jasper, and we'll still have Edward and Bella around. 'K, yes.
Question #5:
Stephenie Meyer: OK, she wants to know how to pronounce a name. I really need to put this up on my website. OK. Car-lile, Ez-may, Jasper, Alice, Rose-alee, Edward, Emmet. Anybody I forget? OK. Those are what you needed? OK, yes.
Question #6:
Stephenie Meyer: She wants to know how I got Alice. And a lot of people ask that very hopefully, thinking that maybe I know Alice, and I wish. No Alice is only her own self, and I'm not really sure how she happened. When it occurred to me, as I started to go past the dream, pretty quickly I knew Edward had a family. And as soon as I knew that, I knew Alice was part of it. And she was completely formed from the very beginning. I wish she was real, I would love to have a friend like Alice. She's awesome. OK, on the stairs, over there.
Question #7: Do you know how much you rock? *laughter from crowd and Stephenie*
Stephenie Meyer: She wants to know if I know how much I rock. Um, I - I - I don't know. When I happen to be in a group like this and people are screaming and stuff, I'm all pretty cool. I mean, I've been to rock concerts, you know, for some of my favorite little bands, that aren't as enthusiastic. And that's pretty amazing. Um, so, thank you.
Question #8: What does an average day seem like?
Stephenie Meyer: An average day. I don't have as many as I used to. Um, on a good day this is the way I like it to work. So I get up, get the kids ready, send them off to school. Then if I'm being good I hit the elliptical machine for about a half hour. Then, you know, I flip through my TiVo for a couple of minutes. I don't tend to watch t.v. any more because it drives me crazy. And then I get all my emails answered, I go and sit down, I put on the headphones, and I write. And that usually takes me to the time when someone says, "What are we having for dinner?" And then I go, "Oh, dang it. We're having ... um... let's see, do we want McDonald's or Sonic tonight?" OK, yes.
Question #9: Is Jacob going to be an important character in the next book?
Stephenie Meyer: Is Jacob going to be an important character in the next book. Yes. I know there's a lot of worry about Jacob. I look through the line today to see what people were thinking as they finish Eclipse and I see a lot of things that surprise me, and I did see a lot of worry going on, and let me just say that Jacob is pretty much my favorite character. *crowd screams* It doesn't mean I don't love Edward, but Edward and Bella are so together, it's like Jacob is still kind of free. Works for me. OK, way up high.
Question #10: I was wondering if you based Bella and Edward's relationship on anyone you know.
Stephenie Meyer: *sighs* I wished I had based it on me. She wants to know if I based Edward and Bella on anyone I know. No. I don't know anyone who has to be with each other that badly. But I have a very very good imagination and I grew up on great love stories, you know. I read about Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester and all of, you know, Mr. Darcy and so, you know, I really love the bad type. OK, yes.
Question #11: Do you have any plans to turn the short story from the Prom Night book into a series?
Stephenie Meyer: Oh, the short story from the Prom Nights... nah, I'm not very good at writing short stories. As soon as I got done with it, I kind of, well I knew where it would go from there, and I have a good friend that lives in California who wrote to me and said, "OK, I know that you know the story, so tell me what happens next." And I said, "Well, I haven't decided completely." So, there's a story there, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to it. Ah. I have so many story ideas to tell before that, so we'll see. But you know. It would have been really interesting to be Sheba, wouldn't it? I mean, you're in a human body now, but all you have to your name is a really nice dress and a great car? It's an interesting problem to have. OK, yes.
Question #12: Do you ever feel any empathy for Victoria?
Stephenie Meyer: Empathy for Victoria. That's a good question. When you write characters, and I think some people write for plot, and some people write because they're kind of able to fuse the language into poetry at the same time. I wish I could do that, but I write for the characters. And when you write for the characters, you have empathy for all of them. And so, yeah. I totally see Victoria's side. I mean, here she is, she loves James. Maybe he doesn't love her as much, but she doesn't really know that, and he gets killed by this stupid vampire who's in love with this stupid human! I mean, where's fairness, you know? And I can see her being kind of ticked off about that, and I think she's totally justifiable. On the other hand, you mess with the Cullens, what do you think is going to happen? I love redheads, so you know there's a little sympathy right there. OK, yes.
Question #13: How could you ----
Stephenie Meyer: How did I come up with the concept of my vampires, because they're not average Halloween vampires. One of the things that helps a lot is when you haven't seen any vampire movies. So then you don't have a very good idea of how the average vampire family lives, and you sort of base it more on how you kind of wish they would, especially if they were like kind of cool superhero vampires. So, I was just making it up, I was just writing for myself, so I wanted it to be the way that I wanted to read, so it was what I thought was cool was really how it happened. OK, way, way, way up there. You're going to have to shout.
Question #14: Why does Bella have such low self esteem? She always seems like she's scared of everybody around her.
Stephenie Meyer: OK, Bella's personality is a very complicated thing. In some ways she has low self-esteem, and in other she doesn't at all, and I think that all of us have our areas that we feel less than in and all of us have places that we feel very comfortable with ourselves. And one place that she does not feel comfortable with herself is dating the hottest male model you've ever seen. And that's a part of her I completely identify with. It was always easier for me when I was dating and I was the prettiest of the two. And I had a real kind of thing for nerd-hot, so... but one time I did have a boyfriend who was super, super pretty and that drove me crazy. It really did. So I can kind of, I can kind of understand. I mean, he was no Edward. I mean, not at all. OK, yes.
Question #15: Who would your favorite author be?
Stephenie Meyer: My favorite author. My favorite author of all time is Jane Austen, she's the best. And then my favorite living author is Orson Scott Card. I do love some good science fiction. OK, back there.
Question #16:
Stephenie Meyer: Alice, Jasper, and Edward all started out with their powers. They realized that in some cases, like Edward right away, well, he didn't realize, Carlisle noticed. Edward sort of answered when things were in Carlisle's head and they kind of figured it out. Jasper it took a lot longer because what he does is a little bit subtler. OK, yes.
Question #17: I saw on your website there's rumors of a movie. Any news of that?
Stephenie Meyer: Ah, movies. This is the status of the movie right now. It's once again optioned. So that's pretty much how it's been for the last three years. The good news is this company seems really excited about doing it the right way. I got a glance at a really serious script that was closer to vampire CSI. I mean, they put it out, and could have never paid me a dime, I mean, really, it had nothing to do with the story. So after that experience, we were really worried and we made a list of all the things they couldn't change, like, you know, Bella cannot become a vampire by the end of the movie. The Cullen family has to exist in its present form. Their names have to be Carlisle and Esme and so on. And they were so willing to embrace our demands that it seems like they really do want to do this right, and they've already got a writer and a director attached, so it's. Oh! And I just found out today: they're going to go check out Forks. I'm so excited! If they film there in Forks I will be so happy. OK,
Question #18: Aro and James ----- Jasper able to use his calming powers on her and like -----
Stephenie Meyer: OK, have you finished reading Eclipse? OK, the answer is at the end. OK...
